How to Cook With Flax Seed
Friday, June 15, 2012 Ground flaxseed adds a nutty, whole grain flavor to your baked goods. It can be added to or substituted for flour, oil, or egg in a recipe.
3 tablespoons of ground flax = 3 tablespoons of flour and 1 tablespoon of oil or fat
You may exchange 1/4 - 1/3 of the flour in a recipe with ground flax. Flax has no gluten so if you substitute at a higher rate your baked good will be heavier and denser.
Example: A recipe calls for 3 cups flour and 1/2 cup oil. Replace with 2 cups flour and 1 cup ground flaxseed. Reduce the oil by 1/4 cup. Each recipe responds differently, so play with it until you get it just the way you like it.
