When do you harvest flax seed?

Friday, July 27, 2012

As you can see in the picture, the flax is ready to harvest.  The flax seeds are found in the bolls on the plant.  We are beginning to swathe our flax today.  This is a little early as it is normally done in August.  Everything is early this year because of the warm spring.  Field work was done ahead of schedule this spring, which also makes harvesting ahead of schedule.

After the flax lays in a windrow for a couple of days to allow the weeds to dry out, we will begin to combine it. Flax is usually a fairly weedy field for us as we use no chemicals on it. We will store the flax seed until we are ready to clean it this winter.

Trivia:  Each boll contains 8 - 10 seeds.

Flax Seed Facts; How much should I use?

Thursday, July 19, 2012
One tablespoon of ground flax seed per day is recommeded to get the recommended allowance of ALA.  If you are using flaxseed because of a medical condition, such as high cholesterol or blood pressure, then 2-4 tablespoons is recommended. Try taking 2 tablepoons twice a day, especially before meals or bedtime.  The fiber will help you feel full.   Most importantly, start slowly with 1/2 tablespoon and gradually increase the amount to avoid intestinal upset.
Ground flax seed is easy and ready to use.

Which is better, brown or golden flax seed?

Wednesday, June 20, 2012
Which is better for you, Brown or Golden Flax Seed?

Nutritionally the brown and golden flax seed are equal.  The difference comes in the taste.  The brown flax seed has a stronger nuttier taste while the golden flaxseed is milder.  If baking with flax seed, the golden keeps the product color close to the original recipe whereas the brown flaxseed will produce a much darker product.

Did you know our flax seed is tested to make sure it meets the nutritional standards on the label?

How to Cook With Flax Seed

Friday, June 15, 2012
Ground flaxseed adds a nutty, whole grain flavor to your baked goods.  It can be added to or substituted for flour, oil, or egg in a recipe.
3 tablespoons of ground flax = 3 tablespoons of flour and 1 tablespoon of oil or fat
You may exchange 1/4 - 1/3 of the flour in a recipe with ground flax.  Flax has no gluten so if you substitute at a higher rate your baked good will be heavier and denser.
Example: A recipe calls for 3 cups flour and 1/2 cup oil.  Replace with 2 cups flour and 1 cup ground flaxseed.  Reduce the oil by 1/4 cup.  Each recipe responds differently, so play with it until you get it just the way you like it.
