How to Store Flax Seed
The directions for storing flaxseed from us may vary from other sources. We allow for the longest expiration date as the greatest of care is taken to send you the freshest flax seed possible.
Our flaxseed is cold-milled which does not heat up the flaxseed when grinding. We also frequently grind the flaxseed so when it arrives at your house it has not been sitting on a shelf for months. With your proper care, your ground flax seed should stay fresh for one year.
When stored properly the flax seed will maintain a mild, nutty flavor. As it gets older the flaxseed may take on a bitter aftertaste.
Whole Flax Seed
Whole flaxseed has a shelf life of two years. It should be stored in a cool area. It can be refrigerated or frozen if purchased in a large quantity and wanting to store it for an extended period of time. Customers purchasing the 25 lb. bags have repackaged the flax seed into ziplock bags and stored them in the freezer, taking them out as needed.
Ground Flax Seed
My favorite way to keep my flaxseed the freshest is to keep a small jar on the table ready for me to use in cooking or on cereal or sandwiches. (Even though I promote and deal with flax seed on a daily basis, if it is not in front of me I forget to use it.) The rest of the flaxseed I put into an opaque container and seal tight. It is best to remove as much air as you can from the container. The two main factors for destroying ground flax seed is oxygen and light. Keeping it sealed tight in an opaque container will ensure lasting freshness. You may close the bag the flax seed is received in by pushing out as much air as possible and sealing as you chose. This flax seed may then be put into either the refrigerator or freezer. The flaxseed should stay fresh for a year.
